Cosy Living Room Inspiration

The living room is where Christmas really happens – films under blankets, presents by the tree and long evenings with the people you love. Here's how to make it feel as cosy as possible.

Layer your lighting

Switch off the main ceiling light and build a glow instead: fairy lights on the tree, candles on the mantel and a lit village scene on a side table. Several small light sources feel far warmer than one bright one.

Choose a colour story

Pick two or three colours and repeat them around the room. Deep red, forest green and antique gold always feel classic; cream, silver and soft white feel calm and wintry.

Bring in texture

Chunky knit throws, velvet cushions and a sheepskin by the sofa make the room inviting. Swap a couple of everyday cushions for festive ones – it's the quickest way to change the feel of a room.

Create a focal point

Let the tree or fireplace be the star. Group decorations together rather than spreading them thinly; a cluster of glowing houses or a festive train on the mantel tells a little story.

Add a little play

A nutcracker music box or a train that circles the tree brings movement and joy – especially for little ones.
