Festive Table Setting Tips

Whether it's Christmas Eve dinner or a long Boxing Day lunch, a beautifully set table makes the meal feel like an occasion. You don't need a lot – just a few thoughtful touches.

Start with a base

A crisp white or linen tablecloth is the perfect canvas. Add a runner in velvet or tartan down the centre to bring in colour.

Build a low centrepiece

Keep it low enough that guests can see each other. A line of greenery with pine cones, candles of different heights and a glowing village house or two creates a magical scene.

Layer each place setting

Stack a charger, dinner plate and side plate, then finish with a folded napkin tied with ribbon and a sprig of rosemary or pine. It looks special and smells wonderful.

Add a personal touch

Handwritten place cards, a small wrapped treat or a mini ornament guests can take home turn a meal into a memory.

Let the candles glow

Light the candles just before everyone sits down and dim the main lights. It instantly sets the mood.
